Today it is easier to meet your friend online than on the street.  Yes, the social media is taking over our lives.  We have facebook, orkut, twitter, Linkedin, digg, mashable.  Today, everyone from teens, to middle-aged to the old use facebook to keep in touch and play with applications like farmville, cafe world etc.

Social media use has increased astronomically since this time last year.  According to a recent survey during December 2009, global users spent an average of five hours on social networking sites, up from three hours in December 2008. That’s an 82% increase.

Facebook and orkut are platforms to share pictures, ideas and network.  Facebook has recently setup one of its biggest offices outside the US in Hyderabad in India.

Twitter has the attraction of sharing short tweets/messages limited to 140 characters.  It also help to share pictures, news, music.  Here one can follow celebrities and can also increase once following and networking.  Twitter also helps like-minded people to share stuff through the retweet feature and good ideas can reach a very large audience within seconds.  Today, politicians and celebrities are tweeting and they have thousands of followers/fans.

Linkedin is another tool for professional networking.  Infact it helps to advertise your cv and also to keep abreast of jobs online and with movements in the workplace.

The social media is also becoming a great advertising tool as you can have a great network by increasing your followers and following the right people.
