Protest

Write a new post in response today’s word ‘Protest’

Her tender arms
Could not resist
The brutal force
Of animal instinct

The lecherous look
Of a trusted relative
Scared her to death
Beneath the sheets

Ripped from the Headlines

November 13, 2015 Leave a comment

Head to your favorite online news source. Pick an article with a headline that grabs you. Now, write a short story based on the article.

The article that grabbed my attention was the Myanmar election news on Yahoo news.

It was heartening to see how Myanmar held an election without any major hiccups.  The world is watching to see how the democratic process in this country will evolve and if the army will give a free hand to the elected leaders to draw a blueprint for the future of Myanmar.

The Nobel peace laureate and longtime political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi has finally been able to contest the election and her party the National league for democracy (NLD) was able to garner an overwhelming majority of the votes.  But due to a clause in the constitution, she is barred from holding the highest office of the President (as her 2 sons and late husband hold british passports).

It will be interesting to see how Suu Kyi is able to work around the constitution in establishing democracy in Myanmar.  How long will a true change in the country take?  Will the army give her a free hand to run the country?

Foreign investors will be most interested in how the developments unfold.  Myanmar can see a huge inflow of investments and economic development if there is a  broad consensus and understanding among all political parties and the army to chart the future of this country together for the best interests of the people.

Too Soon?

October 5, 2015 Leave a comment

Can anything be funny, or are some things off limits?

Laughter is a great tranquiliser – a great medicine.  Humour is not easy and not everyone can be funny.  It is a sign of a mature person.

However, most people tend to use slapstick comedy or vulgar language to make people laugh and this does not require great effort.  According to me, true humour is that which can make people laugh without offending them.  There are certain areas like race, religion etc which can affect the cultural sensitivities of people.

Humour can be found in almost every situation in our lives.  By looking at these situations from a different perspective makes us enjoy life and spread some cheer around us.

Smiles and laughter can recharge you and have a great effect on our well-being.   Laughter and good humour is infectious.  The sound of roaring laughter is also contagious.  When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy.  Llaughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humour and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy,  diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress

I love to watch standup comedies, fun sitcoms like Friends, Seinfeld, Whose line is it anyway, Just for laughs, Mind your language etc. I also try to play with my daughter whenever I get time. Children have a natural sense of humour and laugh much more than adults. Watching cartoons like Tom & Jerry, Popeye with your child is also a great way to relax at home and enjoy some laughter.

I  love R K Laxman’s  daily cartoon in the Times of India with his unique ‘common man’.  I also love Dilbert strips about office politics.

When it comes to books it has to be PG Wodehouse with his unique style of writing.  Jeeves never fails to make us laugh.   Then there are TinTin comics which are a fun read.

Laughter teaches us not to take everything too seriously. It makes us lighten up and also lightens the mood of those around us.

Whether it is sharing a good joke, relating a humorous anecdote or watching a funny movie – we can inject some humour into our daily life to smile, enhance our personality and spread the good feeling to those around us.

In life we are struck by joys and sorrows which can rock our boat.  In such times we can
.. share a happy moment with family and friends to help to lift our spirits
..count our blessings
..look at things from a different perspective

William James the American author said, “We don’t laugh because we’re happy, we are happy because we laugh.”

When Childhood Ends

September 28, 2015 Leave a comment

When you stop
To look at the full moon
And utter soft whispers
To the starlit sky

When you climb trees
Or play in roadside puddles
And dance in the rain
in gay abandon

When doubts rise from your bosom
And your eyes light up in wonder
When you move from one task to another
Without loss of energy

When you see no divisions
in colour, caste, race or religion
When you can laugh with joy
Or dance like nobody’s watching

Then there is a child in you
Brimming with boundless joy
Who knows only love
And Childhood never ends

Lucky star!

August 3, 2015 Leave a comment

Today is your lucky day. You get three wishes, granted to you
by
The Daily Post. What are your three wishes and why?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us WISHES.

My 3 wishes would be:

  1. World Peace: I wish for a world which is free from fear and lives in peace. A world not divided by narrow mindedness, caste, creed and colour.
  2. Alleviation of Poverty: Today if there is more kindness around, it is possible for the rich nations and top net-worth individuals to help to alleviate some poverty in those nations like Sudan, Ethiopia etc where children are malnourished and live in abject poverty. Ofcourse, the ideal situation would be where everyone would contribute based on their capacity.
  1. Education for all: My wish would be for a world where education can reach the nooks and corners of every village.  Where NGOs, voluntary organisations and private companies work supported by governments to make sure that every child has access to basic education.

All about me

Explain why you chose your blog’s name and what it means to you

The circumstances and events that shape my life are like the images in a kaleidoscope.  They are ever changing and ephemeral.  These events have shaped  me and influenced me and make me what I am. I write here what comes to my mind or based on daily prompts.  There are also random bursts of inspiration  – A creative flow from the deep recesses of my mind. An outlet to express my emotions.  An expression of love, a celebration of success, an inspiration on the joys of life and a search for the truth.

I would also like my writing to inspire noble causes like education for the poor, standing up against injustice and corruption, racial injustice and other ills in our society.

As I watch these events go by I know they are but like changing seasons reflecting different moods.  I hope that my writing will serve to inspire you the reader to find something in common.  I hope that my writing can be a voice for those who have no voice.

Above all, I am reminded that I am just a witness to all this.  I am part of a wonderful community of bloggers  who  can write to inform, to educate, to share, to lift the spirits, to lighten the mood, to seek the truth, to inspire with poetry, stories, art, travel and photography.

Ripped from the Headlines

Click over to whatever website you visit most frequently to get news.  Find the third headline on the page.  Make sure that headline is in your post

koalas

The 3rd headline that appears on my Google news list is “Singapore zoo to welcome four koalas from Australia”

As part of the SG50 celebrations and building better diplomatic relations between Singapore and Australia,  the Australian Government announced that 4 Koalas would be flown in from Brisbane and will be at the Singapore zoo for a period of 6 months.  This is seen as a gesture of goodwill between the two countries and as a part of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries called Project 2025.

It provides a 10-year framework for closer economic ties, as well as in defence, foreign affairs and people-to-people fields.

I want to know what love is…

March 16, 2015 3 comments

We each have many types of love relationships — parents, children, spouses, friends. And they’re not always with people; you may love an animal, or a place. Is there a single idea or definition that runs through all the varieties of “love”?

All your life
We were the centre of your universe
How can I describe love
Patient, selfless, sincere?

The day I heard you speak
Tears streamed from my eyes
How can I describe love
Innocent, bright, wondrous?

The magic of your creation
Bewildering, Unfathomable
How can I describe love
Inspiring, Overwhelming, bliss

Shaking order into random motion
Blending art into my logic
Bringing music into mundane routine
Complementing the voids

Trying to define love
Is shining a candle to the sun
Lifting the veil of ignorance
Lead me into your light

Circle of Five

A writer once said, You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”  If this is true, which five people would you like to spend your time with?

I would consider it a great priviledge and honour if I could spend some time with these people.    I would like to learn from these people but I still want to be my unique self.  I believe that by spending more time with inspiring, motivating and humorous people some of their enthusiasm and creative energy would influence me and motivate me to become a better person.

Jerry Seinfeld
I enjoy watching him perform stand-up comedy as well as on the sitcom Seinfeld.  He has a great sense of humour

Stephen Hawking
One great physicist I would love to meet in my lifetime.  He is a very inspiring person.

Amitabh Bachchan
A superstar of Bollywood cinema who has made a name for himself in Hollywood also.  He has a great personality with a towering figure and a baritone  voice that captures everyones attention

Jim Rohn
One of my favourite motivational speakers.  I would like to learn a lot from him.

Dr. APJ Abdul  Kalam
The man behind India’s successful space programme.  A great scientist who inspires Indians everywhere with his great ideas and humility.

Plead the Fifth

What question do you hate to be asked? Why?

Where are you going?
How old are you?
When are you getting married?
Is it a boy or a girl?

How much do you make?
Why have you become so weak ?
Why are you so late from work?
What is your wi-fi  password?

There is a limit to the pesky questions people can ask you which can intrude into your personal space.  There are so many answers we do not know about the universe, science, technology but people would rather not discuss these.  The favourite pastime is gossip.

People who ask these questions must be rather bored or have no hobby/personal interest because they are not interested in their  own lives but would rather try to gather all personal details about you  (even your bank balance).

Sometimes you think that these people need to be told off  as they can be rather irritating and get on your nerves.  But that may not always be the right approach.

Most of the time – the vitriol and gossip comes from a deep sense of lacking and inferiority complex. So, we have to realize for your own sense of well-being that this is not personal to you; it’s all about them and what is missing inside of them.

Understand that their lack of self-competence is driving them to take cheap shots at you because they see something in you that they want but can’t have, usually because they lack the discipline to put in effort or to try harder. Again, it’s not about you; it’s right back to what’s not going right inside of them.
