City Planners

If you could clone one element from another city you’ve visited — a building, a cultural institution, a common street food, etc. — and bring it back to your own hometown, what would it be?

I would not want to see the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Taj Mahal in any other city. These are not just buildings or monuments they have a history and heritage which are unique to the cities to which they belong.

A cities hustle and bustle, the culture, the food and festivals are unique features. The are the essence, the life of the city and cannot be cloned.

There is a new trend of cloning that is prevalent today. People want to clone products, replicate model cities, clone animals, convert people to their beliefs and so on. What they forget is that variety is the spice of life.

Would life be interesting if there is nothing new, and everywhere you look you see your clone?

Holiday in the Riau archipelago – Bintan getaway

Inspite of being so close Bintan we had never made a trip there and we decided to take a trip there. To get there we have to take a 1 hour ferry ride from Tanah Merah ferry terminal. Check-in , customs and immigration are a breeze at the terminal which has all facilities and is just like an airport. The ferry ride is also comfortable and has an in-house kiosk which serves snacks and drinks.

We had booked our stay at Nirwana Resort hotel which is one of the hotels under the Bintan resorts chain. We had a feeling of having ample time when we got there as Indonesia is 1 hour behind Singapore. The beach is clean and pristine and the sand was sparkling clean. The resort also has a big swimming pool.

There are a lot of recreational activities like archery, shooting, flying fox, bowling, badminton, table-tennis, gymnasium, elephant show, horse riding etc at the resort centre. Apart from this there are city tours, mangrove tour, heritage tours, kayaking, snorkelling and other water sports activities around the island. The kids can enjoy the kids club and trampoline which is near the swimming pool. Companies also host their team builiding activities at the resort centre.

We saw the elephant show. My daughter tried out the trampoline and horse ride and I enjoyed the flying fox zip line.

The mangrove tour was truly worthwhile and we had a young guide who gave us a very good idea of mangroves, their importance,
conservation, the different wildlife found near the swamp jungles, the fishing village near the area. We also had a break to drink tender
coconut water.

For the city tour we took at taxi to Tanjong Pinang .. we did some shopping for souvenirs here, had some local food and visited Pasar Oleh Oleh.

We headed back by ferry with lingering memories of the beaches, fun activities and relaxed stay at Bintan!
