The Happy Wanderer

April 30, 2015 Leave a comment

What’s your travel style? Are you itinerary and schedule driven, needing to have every step mapped out in advance or are you content to arrive without a plan and let happenstance be your guide?

I am not much of a planner when it comes to travelling.  So sometimes I miss out on good deals. But there is fun in taking some risk and making last minute bookings.  I have done free-and-easy trips.  The fun is that you get to soak in the local sights and sounds, take the local transport and explore areas that you would not get to see if you are on a planned itinerary.  (Usually, guided tours only cover places of interest)

But if I am visiting a new country I do some planning to avoid hassles.  Many a times, I could not get flight tickets or a hotel by waiting too long to decide. A good tour guide with a knowledge of the local history, customs, monuments and cuisine can be of great help when visiting a new country.  He can make your journey enjoyable and you can learn a few things about the place.

I have a lot of places to explore and countries to learn about and I need to pack my bags soon! I have taken flights and buses and one thing  I would love to try is go backpacking on  some adventurous trips, treks and climbs with groups of people.

Interplanet Janet

You get to design your own planet: tell us all about your planet — the weather, the seasons, the inhabitants. Go.

I would try to preserve the greenery on my planet rather than design an artificial ecosystem. Nature’s cycle would not be disturbed to give way to our ambitions wrecking havoc and disorder. There would be growth and development but with careful consideration to our nature.

Nature is an embodiment of infinite love. She just gives us all we need and does not take anything in return. We have to build our planet with  nature at the centre of everything we do. In this way we can reap immense rewards as nature will only bless us with bountiful rain and wonderful weather all year round.

Reducing, reusing and recycling will be practiced in schools and become a habit of our citizens. In this way we will not pollute our beaches and our habitat. It is the responsibility of the inhabitants to preserve the beauty and greenery on our planet. They would do this through education, empowerment and rewards.

If I had a hammer!

April 10, 2015 2 comments

If you could learn a trade — say carpentry, electrical work, roofing, landscaping, plumbing, flooring, drywall — you name it — what skill(s) would you love to have in your back pocket?

Being a handyman can prove to be a real blessing!.  We do not need to raise our hands and shout for help everytime there is a small repair work at home.  Being an engineer, I love to tinker with stuff and try to repair stuff.  I have built my own amplifier system at home.  Ofcourse, I am not always successful and sometimes after all the effort, I have had to raise my hands and call the repair man.  But, most of the time, I will give it my best shot.

So if there is a blocked sink in the kitchen, there is a fan to be installed, some drilling to fix a showpiece,  cleaning the airconditioner,  replacing a tap, assembling furniture from Ikea or fixing a computer – I will try to check out if I have all the right tools before I set out on my mission.

DIY is interesting! Trying out these odd jobs has always proved to be a blessing for me as it has saved me a lot of hassle of trying to contact the plumber, electrician or a handyman!

Ripped from the Headlines

Click over to whatever website you visit most frequently to get news.  Find the third headline on the page.  Make sure that headline is in your post

koalas

The 3rd headline that appears on my Google news list is “Singapore zoo to welcome four koalas from Australia”

As part of the SG50 celebrations and building better diplomatic relations between Singapore and Australia,  the Australian Government announced that 4 Koalas would be flown in from Brisbane and will be at the Singapore zoo for a period of 6 months.  This is seen as a gesture of goodwill between the two countries and as a part of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries called Project 2025.

It provides a 10-year framework for closer economic ties, as well as in defence, foreign affairs and people-to-people fields.
