Play Lexicographer

Create a new word and explain its meaning and etymology.

Sootakamadi (soo-taka-madi) :
(noun, origin Indian, plural: Sootakamadis ). .

  • Describes a person who is carefree, relaxed and happy-go-lucky.

Eg.  With the long weekend ahead it is a great time for Sootakamadis  to chill out.

The favourite pastime of a Sootakamadi is eating, drinking and sleeping

This word was coined by me and used only at home.  It was not shared with the outside world as I did not want it to become a trite, hackneyed word .

Embrace the Ick

Think of something that truly repulses you. Hold that thought until your skin squirms. Now, write a glowing puff piece about its amazing merits.

Katsaridophobia – That is the what the fear of cockroaches is called.  But for me more than the fear is the dislike/disgust at these creatures.  They crawl up from nooks and corners in your home and can survive extreme conditions.

Both my wife and daughter scream for my help when they see one and dare not go anywhere near it.

They are disgusting because they are difficult to get rid off, they can sometimes fly and  they can keep on multiplying in numbers.

For me the most effective way of dealing with a cockroach is by spraying baygon on them.   They will flip over,  and will run helter-skelter till they succumb to the effects of the insecticide.

Re-springing your step

January 20, 2015 1 comment

Tell us about the last experience you had that left you feeling fresh, energized, and rejuvenated.  What was it that had such a positive effect on you?

springstep2

There are couple of things that energize me leaving me refreshed and reinvigorated.  First among these is waking up early in the morning followed by a morning jog or some quiet time for  reflection.

On weekends a good afternoon nap is one of the best ways to feel  fresh and recharged.

On weekdays after a days work, I find that the best way to relax and recharge is to attend a toastmasters session where I get to network with  friends and have fun through learning and sharing

Spending some time everyday watching Friends, Comedy central or Standup comedies and reading a good book are ways to recharge myself.

Travelling to a new destination to soak in the sights, sounds and culture also has a soothing effect for me after a week of hectic work.

A good massage at a spa also rejuvenates me and leaves me alive and kicking

Finally, listening/playing music and being with my family leave me refreshed

Connect the Dots

January 15, 2015 1 comment

Open your nearest book to page 82.  Take the third full sentence on the page, and work it into a post somehow

The abductionPg82_line3

The book that I have nearest to me today is “The Abduction” by John Grisham.  And the 3rd line on page 82 reads :

“ I never saw her wear it.  I don’t think she wore the cap either”.

She had a habit of keeping her new dress carefully in her cubboard and she would only wear it on a special occasion.  I wondered when that time would come.

I hoped that she liked the gift.  I had spend a lot of time shopping for the dress and the cap.

Five months had passed .

On our anniversary, we had planned a surprise holiday.  She woke me up in the morning.  She was wearing the beautiful dress and the cap and she looked gorgeous!

Image search

January 14, 2015 Leave a comment

Pick a random word and do Google image search on it. Check out the eleventh picture it brings up. Write about whatever that image brings to mind.

delight2

Delight

Verb
please (someone) greatly
“an experience guaranteed to delight both young and old”

Noun
great pleasure
“she took great delight in telling your story”

A smile on your face brings delight to those around you and can make your day.  I tty to watch my favourite humour series like Friends, Seinfeld, Everybody likes Raymond, Whose line is it anyway, Just for Laughs, , Americas funniest home videos.  I also watch stand-up comedy and read books on humour to tickle  my funny bones.

A good movie,  a good performance or a good speech is also a delight to watch.

Daring Do

January 6, 2015 2 comments

Tell us about the time you rescued someone else (person or animal) from a dangerous situation. What happened? How did you prevail?

In response to today’s prompt, I am posting a poem on Courage which I had done earlier

.

Courage

When you are in the middle of critics
And not a  single soul believes you
When the whole world thinks you are a liar
Can you stand up for the truth?

When failure stares at you
When anguish, sorrow and pain confront you
When storms tear you asunder
Do you still follow your dream?

When there is a steep mountain to climb
And your legs are weak and tired
When the slope is slippery and arduous
Do you lose sight of your goal?

When this body is shrieking in agony
And the final moment nears
When the last breath is seeping out
Can you smile and face death?

Courage is not bravado
You don’t have to shout and roar
It is that little voice within you
That constantly guides you

The First Days

January 5, 2015 Leave a comment

ScreenHunter_142 Jan. 05 23.28saj_violin

The first days – the days I took a decision to learn something new have been very memorable.  Be it learning to drive and getting my licence, or learning to swim, learning to play the violin, writing a blogpost or doing my ice-breaker speech at my toastmasters club

I hope that there are many more firsts in this year or the coming years – like travelling to an exotic place, learning a new language, learning to ride a motorbike,  doing a bungy jump, starting a new venture on my own, driving to a new far-off destination etc.

2014 in review

January 4, 2015 Leave a comment

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,400 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 57 trips to carry that many people.

New Skin

January 2, 2015 1 comment

If you could spend the next year as someone radically different from the current “you” – a member of a different species, someone from a different gender or generation, etc. who would you choose to be?

Many great leaders, sportsmen, actors, singers and scientists have inspired me and I have read their autobiographies and grew up admiring their character, perseverance, integrity and resilience.

However, coming to the question of living their life or mimicking them would be totally impossible for me.  I believe that each of us is unique and we are also shaped by our unique environments, our society, our parents, our teachers and our close friends.  So although we may look up to someone as a role model  it is wrong to draw comparisons or  envy them or dream of coveting their possessions.

More than a new skin, a makeover or cosmetic surgery to create a replica of someone else, what is needed is an inner surgery to examine how we could change our character and our attitude.  Gandhi said : “Be the change that you want to see in the world”.

So I would rather spend the new year being myself but making a purposeful effort to better myself, to take risks, to learn new skills, to  be thankful for what I have  and  to enjoy every day.
