notre dame de la garde2

The book that is closest to me is the classic “Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas and the 10th word on the first page is “Notre-Dame de la Garde”.

France has always been a favourite place for me and it is on my list of places to visit.  This is so because I have studied French in school and understand some of its history and culture. The beautiful monuments, the French food and fashion are some of the things that attract visitors to this great tourist destination.

Notre-Dame de la Garde (literally Our Lady of the Guard), is a Catholic basilica in Marseille, France. This Neo-byzantine church was built by the architect Henri-Jacques Esperandieu on the foundations of an ancient fort located at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 149 m (490 ft) limestone outcrop on the south side of the Old Port. It is a major local landmark and the site of a popular annual pilgrimage every year on Assumption Day, August 15.
