The Mask

The curtain of clouds  has cleared
The sun lights the stage
A new day, a new act will be staged
All of us are wearing  masks
The show has begun
Acting is our forte

Sometimes we are a child
Crying out for attention
In another scene we are parents
Teaching our children
An employee at the office
Or a spouse at home

The show is a thriller
With a host of surprises
It has action and emotion
Humour and suspense
You can have popcorn
and coke during the show too

We get carried away in our roles
An emotional roller-coaster
The scenes keep changing
And new actors appear
Time just fleets by
And we have grown old

When will you throw that mask away?
How long can you hide behind that shadow?
Suppressing your true self
The curtains will soon fall
And the sun will set
Come out of that cocoon
And live life carefree

I liked the last paragraph “come out of the cocoon and live life carefree”. I think in our human physical world this is not possible to complete but perhaps when our bodies go to rest, our souls will complete the journey of being carefree!

I just posted new article. Come back to visit.

Hi Terrans – Yes, it is a pity that even though our essential nature is freedom and bliss we bind ourselves. Thanks for the comment:)

Life is a stage and we are but actors. If only all of us could lead it sans expectations and worries.

    thought provoking poem sanjeev ..
I wish we could live care free,
throwing away the masks of life!
But again this is life and it is our duty to keep it at times
    to make others happy
    who are around us !!

Life does feel like a big show. Getting into your own character is sometimes the hardest thing when other roles seem so much more important or look better. Enjoyed your poem.

Great message here. We so often live our lives pretending to be somebody else, we even sometimes play differently in front of different people… I think we should finally give it up and just be ourselves, not trapped behind our masks. Well put in your poem! 😉

Life’s a stage, but do we have to be actors? Good word.

  15. July 4, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Yes life is a play. The key to happiness is realising this and just having fun! I am attempting to throw away my mask and step outside of the play, but it isn’t easy.

What a beautiful poem. Awesome 🙂

I loved the way the cloud curtains parted and the sun shown on the stage for masked actors playing their part. A nice way of putting it.
